Conheça a campanha

Come with us, in this Apotheosis of memories, let’s make this film together and discover When Samba paraded at Carnival!
Production of a feature-length documentary that presents the origins of samba and samba school parades at the carnival in Rio de Janeiro, back when it was the capital of Brazil, from 1880 to 1935, in order to bring to the fore the power of these cultural heritage.
The NGO Casa da Tia Ciata (House of Aunt Ciata), together with director Rodrigo Savastano and audiovisual producer Breno Soares, from Maraberto Filmes, and music producer Mauro Cleverson, joined in an undertaking full of memory, drumming and sequins, making a very special documentary, telling the story from: “When Samba Paraded at Carnival”.
Every year, the parade of samba schools at the Rio de Janeiro Carnival is admired by millions of people in Brazil and worldwide. Today, carnival is recognized as a cultural heritage and celebrated as a fundamental manifestation of our identity, but it was not always so. It is a very long story, and that is what we want to tell.
The team started from recordings made in 1995 with the then members of the Old Guard of Mangueira: Dona Zica, Dona Neuma, Carlos Cachaça, Delegado and others. In these interviews, the accounts of the first parades of the Samba Schools, between 1928 and 1935, were the most surprising, exciting and revealing. The joy and affection evoked by the memories of those first moments of samba participating in the parades at the Rio carnival defined the direction of the film: the incredible encounter between samba and carnival. In addition to the aforementioned material, we delved into hundreds of other archival materials to build a rich panorama of samba and carnival.
Our goal is to create a reference work that shows the birth of modern carnival to new and old generations, with a central focus on Rio de Janeiro's social history, especially that of its Afro-Brazilian inhabitants. The story begins in the early 1880s, a time of change: slavery / abolition, Empire / Republic, entrudo (savage street gathering) / carnival, going through a series of important carnival elements in these metamorphoses: the great societies, the masked characters, the end of the colonial entrudo, cordões (ancient street bandstands), ranches, Praça XI square (ancient iconic square at Rio de Janeiro), drumming, sambas and the creation of samba schools. The profusion of period iconographic material is noteworthy, in large part, made available in public collections.

A documentary epic that narrates the establishment of the modern carnival in Rio de Janeiro, its transformations and characters, from the end of the 19th century until the first parades of the samba schools in the carnival.
For this reason, it was selected by Matchfunding BNDES +, which will enhance projects that bring a legacy to these cultural heritage assets. For each real/dollar that we manage to raise with our network, the BNDES will put two more reais in the project, tripling the general funding.
Every penny, makes 3 pennies!
Like samba and carnival, this film is collaborative. We created this crowdfunding campaign to raise the necessary funds to make the film. Contribute and share!
