O que é o projeto?
O Quelônios do Rio das Mortes é um projeto de conservação de tartarugas no maior afluente do rio Araguaia, o belíssimo Rio das Mortes. Esse rio está localizado no estado do Mato Grosso, em uma região inserida no Arco do Desmatamento da Amazônia. A Aliança da Terra, ONG brasileira, conserva duas espécies de tartarugas nesse rio, o tracajá (Podocnemis unifilis) e a tartaruga-da-Amazônia (Podocnemis expansa). As populações dessas duas espécies têm diminuído muito e nós da Aliança da Terra estamos lutando para evitar essa situação. No município de Novo Santo Antônio, a Aliança da Terra tem uma equipe que, durante o período reprodutivo das tartarugas (julho a dezembro), monitora diariamente 10km do Rio das Mortes e seis praias utilizadas pelas tartarugas para reproduzir. Todos os ninhos e filhotes nascidos nessas praias são protegidos pela nossa equipe. Além disso, fazemos questão de levar alunos de escolas municipais da região para conhecer o projeto e nos ajudar a proteger as tartarugas. Entre janeiro e junho nós ajudamos na fiscalização de 50km do Rio das Mortes, protegendo a biodiversidade contra a pressão antrópica.
Por que apoiar esse projeto?
Apesar do nome, o Rio das Mortes tem muita vida e nós da Aliança da Terra estamos lutando mantê-lo sempre assim. As tartarugas do Rio das Mortes estão ameaçadas pela depredação de ninhos, coleta e comercialização de ovos e adultos, além da degradação ambiental. Desde 2006 a Aliança da Terra tem protegido o rio e suas tartarugas, mas estamos enfrentando uma dificuldade: a falta de um motor de popa. O nosso estragou e só estamos conseguindo continuar nosso trabalho de proteção graças a um motor que conseguimos emprestado.

Com a sua colaboração vamos comprar um motor de popa para o projeto e assim poderemos continuar conservando o Rio das Mortes e milhares de tartarugas todos os anos, além de protegermos a biodiversidade do rio e de envolvermos toda a comunidade escolar na conservação ambiental.

A Aliança da Terra executa desde 2006 o projeto Quelônios do Rio das Mortes em Novo Santo Antônio (MT). Nesse período, já foram protegidos mais de 5.500 ninhos e 40.000 filhotes de tracajá e tartaruga-da-Amazônia!

Como o dinheiro arrecadado será usado?
Com o dinheiro arrecadado compraremos um motor de popa que será usado por nossa equipe do projeto Quelônios do Rio das Mortes diariamente. Com o motor será possível continuar protegendo 10km de rio, seis praias e milhares de tartarugas. Além do motor, o dinheiro arrecadado será usado para arcar com custos de confecção e envio de recompensas, pagar taxas bancárias, contribuir com o Benfeitoria e também cobrir uma margem de erro. WHAT IS THE
PROJECT?
Turtles of Rio das Mortes is a turtle conservation project in the largest tributary of the Araguaia River, the beautiful River of the Dead. This river is located in the state of Mato Grosso, in a region within the Amazon Deforestation Arch. Aliança da Terra, a Brazilian NGO, preserves two species of turtles whose home is this river, the Yellow-spotted River Turtle (Podocnemis unifilis) and the South American River turtle (P. expansa). The populations of these two species have been rapidly declining due to human and natural threats. We at Aliança da Terra are fighting to reestablish the turtle populations in this river!
Every day during the turtle’s reproductive season (July-December), the Aliança da Terra team monitors 10km along the Rio das Mortes and six beaches used by the turtles to reproduce. All nests and hatchlings born in these beaches are protected by our team and locals we engage in the project. We teach about the turtle project and the importance of conserving the environment to students in the region.
From January to June our team assists in the supervision of 50km along the Rio das Mortes, educating locals about the importance of environmental conservation and protecting biodiversity against human exploitation.
WHY SUPPORT THIS PROJECT?
Rio das Mortes means “River of the Dead” in Portuguese. Despite the name, there is an abundance of life in the Rio das Mortes and we at Aliança da Terra are constantly fighting to help it survive. The Rio das Mortes turtles are highly threatened by the predation of nests, collection and hunting of eggs and adults, and environmental degradation. Our protection efforts have saved over 40,000 turtle eggs since 2006 and educated locals in environmental awareness and protection.
To continue protecting the turtles and river ecosystems, we need to be able to reach the areas we protect! Alas, the motor we have been using to navigate the river has broken one too many times and is a lost cause to repair. So we can spend more time saving turtles and less time fighting a broken engine, we need your support tobuy a new motor.

With your help we will buy an outboard motor for the project so we can keep saving the Rio das Mortes and thousands of turtles each year! In addition, your generosity will help us continue to protect the biodiversity of the river and engage the whole community in environmental conservation.

HOW WILL YOUR DONATIONS BE USED?
With the money raised we will buy an outboard engine that will be used daily by our Turtle project team on the Rio das Mortes. With the engine we will be able to continue protecting 10km of river, six beaches and thousands of turtles. Money raised beyond the engine cost will be used to pay the costs of preparation and shipping rewards, banking fees, the percentage for using the Benfeitoria platform and any margin of error.
